Approval of 10-Storey Apartment Building in St.John Nears Final Stages

A proposed 10-storey apartment building in the east end of St. John’s is nearing final approval.

The development, planned for New Cove Road on the site of the former YMCA and Max Athletics building, will involve demolishing the existing structure to make way for the new project.

Developer KMK Capital has received several accommodations from the city to move the project forward. These include rezoning the land, approval despite being six parking spaces short of the requirement, and a waiver on the building setback.

The necessary amendments have already been approved by the province and were unanimously adopted by St. John’s City Council earlier this week.

A public hearing is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on February 12th at City Hall, with an option to attend via Zoom. Following the hearing, the report and project will return to council for a final vote.

It remains unclear whether the separate two-storey parking garage included in the original application is still part of the plan.
